Male io moth (Automeris io) displaying eyespots. Io moths show sexual dimorphism. The males are yellow and the females are red. This moth is on the moss covered side of a water tupelo (Nyssa aquatica) tree. This moth will flash open its forewings to quickly display the eyespots to startle or scare off a potential bird or mammalian predator. Congaree National Park, SC, spring.
