Savannah Darter, Etheostoma mariae; pair in breeding color (female on left). Darters comprise a large group of small and frequently very colorful fishes that are found only in North America. The Savannah darter has a rather small range, inhabiting gravel-bottomed streams within a small portion of adjacent SC and GA. As in many darters of the genus Etheostoma, the males are much more brightly colored than their mates.
