Early stage (instar) of the gypsy moth, Lymantria dispar. Originally ranging from Europe to Asia, it was introduced to North America in the late 1860s and has been expanding its range ever since, causing great damage to trees. The gypsy moth prefers oaks, but will also feed on aspen, apples, sweetgum, speckled alder, basswood, gray and paper birch, poplars, willows, and hawthorns.
