The Rich Mountain Salamander, Plethodon ouachitae, is only found in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma, USA. The International Union for the Conservation of Nature lists the species as "near threatened." This mental gland below the chin of a male produces pheromones. The chemicals can be used by the male during courtship to increase female receptivity. This individual was photographed in Oklahoma's Ouachita Mountains in 2012.
