Wild chickens are found throughout Kauai, Hawaii and there are several theories about their proliferation. One is that during Hurricane Inki, September 1992, coops were destroyed and many domestic fowls escaped, increasing the feral chicken population. Another is that cocks used for illegal cockfighting were let go when they outlived their fighting days. Today a love-hate relationship exists between people and the wild fowl: tourists often complain about their non-stop crowing. But they do add interest and color to the Kauai scene.
