Cheek teeth of a large mammoth. The tooth, about 250 mm long, is crossed by rough ridges. Mammoths, larger than modern elephants, were well adapted to living in the cold on the margins of the Pleistocene ice sheet. Mammoth fossils are found in rocks from the Miocene to the Pleistocene Epochs throughout North America, Europe, Africa and Asia.
