Pedestrians battle against hurricane Katrina as it brought heavy storms to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, USA. Although a voluntary evacuation order was in place in Florida, many people remained, and two were killed by falling trees. Katrina did more damage further west, however, as the strongest part of the storm made landfall on the Gulf of Mexico coast. It devastated coastal regions of Mississippi and Louisiana. The poor and low-lying port city of New Orleans was left under polluted flood waters, and hundreds of people died. It is thought that Katrina was the most costly natural disaster to strike the USA at the time. Photograped on 25th August 2005.
