Greensburg, Kansas resident Slyvia Hess gestures to the basement of her destroyed home where she survived a direct strike by an EF5 tornado. Much of the idyllic, western Kansas town was obliterated by winds in excess of 200 miles per hour as the 1.75 mile-wide twister struck the community. It was the first EF5 tornado recorded in the United States since the National Weather Service switched to the Enhanced Fujita scale on February 1, 2007.
