Transylvania, Romania. After the conquest of Dacia in 106 AD Roman Emperor Trajan founded a new town, Colonia Ulpia Traiana Augusta Dacia. It was later renamed by Emperor Hadrian as Colonia Ulpia Traiana Sarmizegtusa. As capital of the Roman province of Dacia it developed into the biggest Roman city North of the Danube and was declared a "metropolis". Among the multitude of temples, baths, administrative buildings and public squares. The oval amphitheatre stands out in this photograph.
