The city of Brasov (Kronstadt in German) profited from its vicinity to the Carpathian passes and grew to be one of Transylvania's most important towns of long distance trade. Landmarks of the Inner Town are the City Hall on the Market Square and foremost the so-called Black Church from the 14th and 15th centuries. This is the most outstanding Gothic sanctuary in South Eastern Europe.
