The smoking crater of the active volcano Kilauea in Hawaii. The Challenger reached the Hawaiian Islands in August 1875 and one of the high points of the visit was a trip to Kilauea, some 1219 metres (4000 feet) above sea level and involving a long and tedious journey from the harbour at Hilo.
