The camp was established in August 1914 as part of the mobilization of the Canadian Expeditionary Force at the beginning of World War I. Typhoid was controlled during the Great War by the use of vaccines which were improved during the war for better effectiveness. As a result of this treatment, only 442 Canadian fell ill to typhoid, and only 16 died of this disease. Bain News Service circa 1914/15.
