Multiple myeloma (cancer that attacks bone and bone marrow) is a ghastly disease. Until recently the period from diagnosis to death was six months or less. With current progress supported by autologous progenitor cell transplant, patients are surviving fifteen or more years with good quality of life. These cells from such a tumor have been grown in culture. They have not been stained nor have filters been introduced. They are unusual in that very little cytoplasm is visible and the heaped up form is typical. Myeloma cells are 'rogue' antibody cells. In the body they produce proteins in vast amounts that literally 'gum' up the organs such as kidneys and they destroy bones in the body leaving 'holes'. With current progress a cure is in sight.
