Color-enhanced scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of bacteria on chicken. Retail chicken flesh was left at room temperature for 2 days and then fixed and prepared for SEM. A wide variety of bacteria (and bad odor) developed on the surface of the flesh particles. They would not be fit for human consumption and could lead to food poisining. The particle surface was pitted in the case of this image. Image width: 11.64 micrometers. Magnification: 8,590x if the image is printed 10 cm wide.
