Throat cancer. Light micrograph of a section through throat tissue showing cancerous cells that have formed small lobules (round layered structures at upper right). These are squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), malignant (cancerous) tumours arising from the squamous cells of the epithelium (lining) of the larynx. The larynx is situated at the top of the trachea (windpipe) and houses the voice box. This cancer may have arisen due to smoking tobacco or heavy consumption of alcohol. Treatment is with radiation therapy or laser excision of the tumour.
