Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an unidentified micro-organism (nicknamed "leftover turkey") discovered in ice from Lake Vostok, Antarctica, about 620 miles from the South Pole. The layer of ice that caps Lake Vostok is approximately 2 miles thick; the core samples containing these specimens are up to 400,000 years old. The ice contains a multitude of recognizable microorganisms, such as diatoms, bacteria, fungi, and pollen grains. But microbes such as the one in this image have never been seen before, and present scientists with the challenge of studying them, and even possibly reviving them from their frozen, anabiotic state.
