This transmission electron micrograph (TEM) depicts a number of Gram-negative Elizabethkingia anophelis bacteria, which had been isolated from specimens obtained during the 2016 outbreak in Wisconsin. Elizabethkingia anophelis bacteria is commonly found worldwide in soil, river water, reservoirs and other places. However, it rarely makes people sick. Elizabethkingia has mostly caused meningitis in infants or bloodstream and respiratory infections in people with weakened immune systems. Currently, in 2016, there's been an outbreak reported in Wisconsin with cases in Michigan and Illinois. As of April 13th in Wisconsin there have been 18 deaths out of 57 patients confirmed with the same strain of Elizabethkingia. All the victims were over 65 and had at least one serious underlying illness. Previous outbreaks have been associated with healthcare settings.
