Equatorial peat swamp forest beside the Sekonyer River, Tanjung Puting National Park, central Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, during the wet season, when water floods into the forest to a depth of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. Peat swamp forests develop from freshwater swamp forests. Acidic humus buildup (water pH from 5 to 3) stains the water black, and peat with 65% organic content can be 5-20 meters deep. Proboscis monkeys and orangutans live in this area, which has a high rate of endemism.
