Beach Pea (Lathyrus japonicus) growing on a sandy spit. This semi-trailing vine has a huge natural range, being found growing in sandy and gravel-based soils, generally coastal, from Labrador to New England; south to New Jersey; along the Great Lakes; Pacific coast from Alaska to California. Also found in Asia, Europe and South America. Part of the reason for it being so widespread is that its seeds can survive up to 5 years floating in salt water. Photo Olympic National Park, WA.
