Color enhanced scanning electron microscope image of red blood cells (erythrocytes) distorted by sickle cell anemia. Abnormal hemoglobin molecules in the cell results in the distortion and fragility of the erythrocytes. Sickle cell anemia is characterized by crisis of joint pain, thrombosis, fever and by chronic anemia, with splenomegaly, lethargy, and weakness. Magnification=900x at 35mm.
