Sodium reacting with chlorine to form sodium chloride (NaCl, table salt). The conical flask is full of the green halogen gas chlorine (Cl2). A piece of sodium metal (Na) has been added. The reaction must be initiated by a drop of water. Water dissolves the coating of sodium oxide or other sodium salt on the surface of the metal. The violent reaction releases much heat.
