This incredibly rich area of the Milky Way includes parts of the constellations of Scutum, Serpens, Sagittarius, Scorpius and Ophiuchus. At right, on the ecliptic between Libra and Sagittarius, is Scorpius, the Scorpion, an ancient zodiacal constellation. The mythology of Scorpius goes back 5,000 years to the Sumerian civilization. In Greek mythology, Scorpius killed Orion, the Hunter, although they are located opposite each other in the sky, with Scorpius being a spring-summer constellation and Orion being a winter constellation. Sagittarius, the Archer, is a zodiacal constellation that lies in the direction of the center of the Milky Way. It lies on the ecliptic in between Scorpius and Capricornus. Stylized drawings of the mythological figure of Sagittarius show a centaur drawing a bow and arrow aimed at the heart of Scorpius. Sagittarius is the current location of the December solstice.
