Abbas Hilmi Pasha (July 1874 - December 1944). Last Khedive of Egypt and Sudan (1892 - 1914). The Great Great Grandson of Muhammad Ali. Suceeded his Father (Tawfiq Pasha). As a boy, visited the United Kingdon and had an English Tutor in Cairo. Schooled in Lausanne, Switzerland and completed his education in Vienna, Austria. GWhiklst in Vienna , the sudden death of his Father raised him to Khedivate and he was only just of age according to Egyptian Law, which fixed majority at age 18 in cases of succession to the throne. Resented the British Agent and Consul General in Cairo Sir Evelyn Baring, who was elevated to the peerage as Lord Cromer. At the beginning of his reign, Abbas surrounded himself with a coterie of European advisors who opposed the British occupation of Egypt and Sudan taking place at this time. When the Ottoman Empire joined the Central Powers in WWI, the UK declared Egypt a British Protectorate and on 18th December 1914, deposed Abbas. His Uncles Husayn Kamil and then Fuad I issued a series of restrictive orders to strip Abbas of propery in Egypt and Sudan and even forbed contributions to him. They also banned Abbas from entering Egyptian territory and stripped him of the right to sue in Egyptian courts. Abbas finally accepted things as they were on May 12th 1931 and abdicated. Retired to Switzerland, where he died in Geneva on 19th December 1944. He had six children.
