A celebration outside St Paul's Cathedral, City of London, on the evening of 3 May 1951, the opening day of the Festival of Britain. About 5000 young people gather on a cleared bomb site behind the Cathedral to sing around a large bonfire, and more than 2000 other bonfires were lit all over the country as a symbol of unity. The crowd of spectators reached nearly 10,000.
