During 1942 and 1943, 23 air raids occurred over the London Region, but they were light in character. The firefighters of the NFS needed to be kept in a state of constant readiness. Training programmes and productive activities helped maintain both fitness and morale. At the Regional headquarters, Lambeth, regular displays and reviews allowed the public to see the work of the greatly enlarged fire service and kept public support on its side. Here firewomen demonstrate their level of fitness with a gymnastic display.
