He appears to be asleep, but may be reading a letter, Mon Cousin...recompense de Ure service ..., lying on the table with two money bags and some loose coins; the table top is supported by an eagle. His coat is decorated with fleurs-de-lis, as is a robe(?) on the table opposite him, and he wears a Louis d'Or medal. Through the window behind him is a view of Emser Bad and hanging on the wall is a picture of tents and a battle scene that is titled Louis Dort which may be a play on the words d'Or and dort. Four lines of verse are printed below the image with title: Amice ad quid venisti (see Matthew 26:50 amice ad quod venisti : friend, whereto art thou come). Date 1705. Louis d'Or.
