Embryo development. Computer illustration of a fertilised egg cell which has divided twice to form four cells. After fertilisation the nuclei of the sperm cell and the egg fuse forming a zygote. The zygote then undergoes repeated mitosis (cell division), occurring approximately every twenty hours, to form a cluster of cells known as a morula, which continues to divide and develops into a blastocyst, and subsequently the embryo.
