Aortic dilation. Computed tomography (CT) scan of a dilation (upper centre) of the aortic arch of a 63-year-old woman. This dilation has been linked to an atheromatous calcium stenosis of the aortic valve. Such dilations are caused by a weakening of the vessel wall, which may be caused by hardening of the vessel (atherosclerosis), high blood pressure or injury. If left untreated, it could develop into an aneurysm and rupture, which is often fatal.
