Changing ice cover in Arctic archipelago, satellite image. North is at top. This is a partial view of the Severnaya Zemlya archipelago in the Russian high Arctic. The islands have large ice caps with icebergs that break off into the surrounding seas. Many of the ice caps have changed in shape as they steepen and retreat due to climate change and global warming. This image is around 100 kilometres across and shows the southern tip of Komsomolets Island (the largest in the archipelago), the eastern side of Pioneer Island, and the northwest side of October Revolution Island. Image obtained on 9 August 2018 by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8.
