A small copy of the lost colossal chryselephantine sculpture of Athena Parthenos, patron goddess of Athens, made by Phidias. The original was housed in the Parthenon and more than 1000 kg of gold was used for the gold and ivory statue, the costs estimated to be between 700 and 1000 talents. Together with the gold-ivory statue of Zeus, also from Pheidias, it was one of the few known giant Greek sculptures covered with gold. Parthenos 'maiden, virgin' was an epithet of Athena. On display at the National Archaeological Museum, Athens.
