Wildfires in northwestern Europe from January to April 2019. These fires were detected using the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) on the Suomi NPP satellite. Each red dot depicts one fire detection. Warm, dry weather was responsible for the rise in wildfire numbers. By the end of April 2019, the UK had already seen more fires through this point in the year than in the record-breaking year of 2018.
