Sunspot observations by Rutherford, 19th century. Sunspots are areas of magnetic activity that are cooler than the rest of the Sun's surface. They range in size from hundreds to thousands of kilometres across. This early observation of sunspots was made by US astronomer Lewis Morris Rutherfurd (1816-1892).
