Hippopotamus at London Zoo, 1852. This animal was captured in August 1849, when quite young, on the banks of the White Nile in Africa. It was sent over to England by the Pasha of Egypt as a present to Queen Victoria, arriving at Southampton on 25 May 1850, and being housed in a section prepared for it at the Zoological Gardens (now London Zoo) in Regent's Park, London, UK. Photographed in 1852 by the Spanish prince Juan de Borbon (using the title the Count de Montizon).
