Human climate niche map, 2070. The map is colour-coded according to suitability for human habitation. Green areas are most suitable, through yellow, and orange to red, the least suitable. This map assumes a Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP), or greenhouse gas concentration trajectory, of 8.5 Watts per meter squared of heat energy trapped by the climate system. This RCP is the worst case climate change scenario. The human climate niche are the areas of Earth that have favourable temperature and precipitation conditions for human habitation. These are generally areas with a mean annual temperature of between 11 to 15 degrees Celsius. Humans have lived in the same climate niche for millenia. The niche is also well suited to growing crops and raising livestock. As global warming changes mean annual temperatures around the globe the areas that are suitable for human habitation will change leading to the need for population redistribution.
