Preserved head of a child found among 33 human sacrifices excavated between 2007 and 2009 at the Chotuna-Chornacap archaeological site, in northern Peru. This site was occupied by the Lambayeque people, also referred to as the Sican culture. These pre-Inca people inhabited an area on the coastline of what is now northern Peru for several hundred years. At the time of these sacrifices (1350 to 1370) the Lambayeque had been conquered by the Chimu and later by the Inca. The sacrifices, of girls and young women, may have been an agricultural fertility rite.
