Colour dispersion in a glass prism, illustration. Light refracts (bends) when passing from one medium into another. As white light passes from air into a glass prism, violet light refracts more than red light because of the difference in their wavelengths. Refraction disperses the colours which make up white light, spreading the light out into a spectrum with red at one end and violet at the other.
