PLATO planet-hunting project CCD sensor. This is one of the 104 charge-coupled devices (CCDs) that will be used in ESA's PLATO mission. The CCDs (each 8x8 centimetres) will be a key element of the largest digital combined camera ever flown in space. This camera will receive light from 26 telescopes, all mounted on a single satellite platform. These CCDs are made by Teledyne e2v in the UK. PLATO (Planetary Transits and Oscillations of Stars) is an ESA mission to find and studying extrasolar planetary systems, especially rocky planets around Sun-like stars. PLATO is scheduled for launch in 2026. Photographed on 4 April 2019.
