Placing his hands on the patient's shoulders, a GP examines the cranial nerves of a young male who is asked to shut his eyes as tightly as possible. This tests the orbicularis oculi muscles which are supplied by the motor fibres of the temporal and zygomatic branches of cranial nerve VII (facial nerve) .
