Elected in 1916, her admission was delayed as congressmen discussed whether a woman should be admitted into the House of Representatives and she was sworn in on April 2nd 1917. She said \'I may be the first woman member of Congress but I won??? be the last.\' A lifelong pacifist, her first vote was against US entry into World War I, and she was the only one to vote against declaring war on Japan after the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.); American, out of copyright.
