The 50 mm Pak 38 (L/60) was first used in the Western Desert in 1941 and at normal combat ranges was capable of penetrating the armour of most Allied tanks used in that theatre, including the Sherman. It was less effective against more heavily armoured tanks like the Soviet T34 and British Churchill. Although it was eventually replaced by more powerful weapons, it remained in service with the Wehrmacht until the end of the war.
