Roman Villa Disclosed By Pompeii Bomb -- Part of the inner courtyard of a Roman Villa brought to light when bombs fell on the ancient roman city during the war. Pieces of Mosaic were found in a crater in front of Pompeii's new museum. Digging began, and the villa, probably a summer residence or night-club, since no kitchen implements were discovered, was disclosed. The 36 brick columns were probably covered with plaster, destroyed by the hot Volcanic Ash which rained upon the city in 79 A.D. The wall painting, left, are in a good state of preservation. They are of the usual Pompeiian pattern with large squares and geometrical nearly 30 feet of volcanic ash. June 14, 1948. (Photo by Associated Press Photo).
