Illustration of Pierre Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais (1732-1799), French philosopher, drama writer and novelist. Beaumarchais was born Pierre-Augustin Caron. At 12 he became an apprentice to his watchmaker father and at the age of 21 invented an escapement that increased the accuracy of watches, whilst allowing them to be more compact. A dispute with the royal clockmaker of France over the invention brought him fame and introduced him to the royal court. He was appointed harp tutor to Loius XV'S daughters and soon became musical advisor to the royal family. Beaumarchais also had roles as a diplomat and spy, as well as many business interests. He played a part in both the American War of Independence and the French Revolution. He is probably best known as a playwright, for his three Figaro plays. Published in 1864.
