The banquet of Dido The history of Dido and Aeneas (series title); A company sits around a table in a room. Servants carry food. One of them pours wine from a jug into the drinking bowl of a harnessed man seated in the foreground. It is Achates; the friend of Aeneas; whom he looks over his shoulder. Aeneas; also in armor; gestures to the woman next to him; Dido; who has put her left arm around a child. This is cupid in the guise of Aeneas' son Ascanias. Next to Dido lie a crown; a scepter and a pearl necklace on a drapery; which partially cover a seat. Plates and dishes are displayed in a buffet against the back wall. Draped curtains hang above it; and oil lamps hang from the ceiling on the left and right. At the far left a woman plays the harp; at the back left; a few musicians play on a balcony. The edges show flowers; fruits; leaf vines and a large variety of birds; against a dark brown background.
