A Move will be made at Group Nine annual meeting next Sunday, at Cootamundra, to scrap the Maher Cup as a challenge trophy. The cup has for many years been recognised as a symbol of Rugby League supremacy in the west. Clubs challenge the holder in rotation each Saturday. The motion to abolish the challenge series will be made by Group Nine president E. Chandler. He claims the Maher Cup has failed to produce one good player for years because players save themselves for the competition matches on the Sunday. February 25, 1951.
