Caldera Blanca, Lanzarote, Spain. Calderas form when a volcano erupts and then collapses, forming a large depression. The emptying of the magma chamber means that the central part of the volcano can no longer support the weight of the volcanic cone and the top collapses. Here, a second upwelling of magma formed a fractured dome at the centre of the caldera.
