This Roman Witcham Gravel helmet, copper alloy and tin, 1 - 100 AD., belonged to a non-citizen soldier serving in an auxiliary cavalry regiment of the Roman army. The helmet was deliberately deposited in a Cambridgeshire marsh. It may have been booty from the Boudican uprising, but could also have been a votive offering made by a soldier of the Roman army practising similar habits to the native population, such as a Batavian from the lower Rhine. After Nero's death, the Batavian auxiliary units of the arny, many of which had served in Britain, rose in a fierce rebellion. British Museum.
