Ireland; Co. Kerry; Ring of Kerry: portrait of Daniel O`Connell (1775 - 1847) in the living room of Derrynane House and Gardens; village of Caherdaniel; Derrynane House; Gardens and Beach together build a national historic park (120 ha) along the coast of Caherdaniel. The historic manor house; today is a museum. the now stately owned estate is called Derrynane; meaning wood of oaks or oak wood; first mentioned by St. Fion醤. In Derrynane House; the politician; Irish emancipator and liberator; called "Great Liberator"; Daniel O`Connell (1775 - 1847); lived during his childhood and used it later on as a summer retreat and residence. Being as well a lawyer; he often succeeded for his underprivileged Irish catholic clients. In 1800; he startet his campaign for equal rights for catholics. In 1829; a first success was the Emancipation act. But O`Connell failed to destroy the Act of Union (1801). Having mobilized the masses; he was arrested in 1843. Released; he left the prison in Dublin in a giant triumphal procession and victory parade; applauded by hundreds of thousands. He took his way in a giant six horse carriage; which today is restored and shown in the shed of Derrynane House. The house as well shows memorabilia of the life of Daniel O`Connell; portraits; living rooms of the O`Connells and the chapel of the manor house. The park and gardens are an oasis of nature with special sections for exotic plants and trees from all over the world. There is as well a special section dedicated to the nature of South America. Further along Derrynane Beach; one may reach Abbey Island with ruins of the abbey and a most pittoresque cemetery. Near Derrynane House; there is as well an original Ogham Stone with inscriptions.
