Jordan; Highway 40; east of Amman; desert castle Qusayr`Amra (also: Qasr Amra); built between 723 - 743 AD: frescoe "The great bather" (great bathing woman) in the bath area; desert castle Qusayr `Amra; also called Quseir Amra and Qasr Amra (little palace of fort of Amra) was built by prince Walid Ibn Yazid; who later became the Umayyad caliph Walid (Al-Walid) II. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; since 1985. It was a hunting lodge and royal retreat in Umayyad architecture style. Most famous are the frescoes on the inside walls; in the reception hall; the throne apse; and the bath rooms. The building is a fine example of early Islamic architecture; inspried by Roman and Byzantine architecture.
