Cuba; capital city Havana: Statue of Carlos Manuel de C閟pedes (1819 - 1874); Carlos Manuel de C閟pedes was a Cuban freedom fighter; was responsible for the outbreak of the first Cuban Freedom War; in 1868; and was elected first president of the Cuban nation by the underground parliament of the Cuban Republic; the Asamblea de Gu醝maro; in 1869 (president until 1873). He is seen as the founder of the Cuban nation.
