Tuscany; city of Cortona; Cortona Cathedral (Concattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta): ancient base of a column at the medieval Romanesque style facade (west front); the cathedral was built on relics of a pagan temple; in 5th or 6th century as a Plebeian church (pieve); but first mentioned; in 11th century; only. In 1325; Cortona became seat of a bishop. The church; only in 1507 became the new cathedral of diocese of Cortona and was this; until 1986; when it became co-cathedral of new diocese Cortona-Arezzo-Sansepolcro. At the west front; a pier with capital; small columns; parts of an arch and the arcade recall the early times; as well a window and a marble plate with coat of arms of 13th century.
